The Importance of Self-Care Days
Listening Before Our Bodies Force Us To
There was a time when I used to wear busy like a badge of honour.
Always on the go, always saying yes, always pushing through. Telling myself I’d rest later, that I just needed to get through this week, this task, this phase and then I’d slow down.
But later, it never came.
Instead, what came was exhaustion. Heavy, deep exhaustion that sleep didn’t fix. A body that started whispering at first, then nudging, then eventually shouting loud enough that I had no choice but to stop.
And if I’m honest, that’s something I see so often in others too.
We wait until we’re burnt out. We wait until we’re in pain. We wait until we can’t carry on.
And only then do we give ourselves permission to rest.
But what if it didn’t have to get to that point?
Your Body Is Always Speaking To You
Our bodies are incredibly intelligent. They are constantly communicating with us, not just when something is wrong, but all the time.
A yawn when we’re tired. Tension in the shoulders when we’re stressed. A heavy feeling in the chest when something doesn’t feel right. That pull to just stop for a moment.
These are not inconveniences.
They are messages.
But somewhere along the way, many of us were taught to ignore them. To push through. To be productive. To keep going no matter what.
“Just get on with it.”“Don’t be lazy.”“You’ll be fine.”
So we override the signals.
We silence the whispers.
Until eventually, the whispers turn into something we can’t ignore.

When We Don’t Listen, The Body Gets Louder
If we don’t listen when our body gently asks for rest, it will find other ways to get our attention.
That might look like:
Constant fatigue
Headaches or migraines
Muscle pain and tension
Poor sleep
Feeling emotionally overwhelmed
Getting run down or unwell
And then we’re forced to stop.
Not because we chose to but because we have no other option.
This is what burnout often feels like. It doesn’t just happen overnight it builds slowly, quietly, over time.
A little too much here. Not enough rest there. Ignoring ourselves again and again until there’s nothing left in the tank.
And burnout isn’t just feeling tired.
It can feel like losing yourself. Like everything is heavy. Like even the smallest things feel overwhelming.
It’s not a place anyone wants to be.
Self-Care Is Not A Luxury , It’s A Necessity
There’s still this belief that self-care is something extra. Something indulgent. Something we’ll do if we have time.
But the truth is self-care is essential.
It’s not just bubble baths and spa days (although those are lovely too!). It’s about creating space to check in with yourself and respond to what you need.
It’s about asking:
How am I actually feeling today?
What does my body need right now?
Am I pushing myself too far?
Self-care is choosing to listen before things get too far.
Because when we take care of ourselves regularly, we don’t reach that breaking point.
What A Self-Care Day Can Really Look Like
A self-care day doesn’t have to be anything extravagant.
It can be simple. Gentle. Intentional.
It might look like:
Slowing your morning down instead of rushing
Sitting with a cup of tea in silence
Going for a walk and feeling the ground beneath your feet
Having a nap without guilt
Turning your phone off for a few hours
Saying no to something that feels too much
Booking that massage or healing session you’ve been putting off
Journaling what’s been sitting on your heart
Or it might simply be doing less.
And allowing that to be enough.
The key is that it feels nourishing to you.
Letting Go Of The Guilt
This is the part many people struggle with (myself included!).
The guilt.
Feeling like we should be doing more. Feeling like we’re being lazy. Feeling like we don’t deserve to rest.
But here’s the truth, rest is not something you have to earn.
You don’t need to be completely exhausted before you’re allowed to stop.
You are allowed to take a break because you want to. You are allowed to slow down because you need to. You are allowed to choose yourself.
And actually, when you do everything else benefits too.
You show up better. You feel clearer. You have more energy to give from a place of fullness, not depletion.
Prevention Is Kinder Than Recovery
Burnout takes time to recover from.
Sometimes weeks. Sometimes months.
It affects your energy, your mindset, your emotions and even your sense of who you are.
And while healing is always possible, it’s so much kinder to yourself to not let it get to that stage in the first place.
Think of self-care like maintaining your wellbeing rather than repairing it.
Little check-ins. Little pauses. Little moments of rest.
They all add up.
They keep you balanced. They keep you connected to yourself. They stop things from building up under the surface.
Learning To Listen Again
If you’ve spent years ignoring your body, it can feel strange at first to start listening.
You might not even know what you need.
And that’s okay.
This is something you can gently relearn.
Start small.
Pause for a moment during your day and ask:
What do I need right now?
And then actually listen to the answer.
It might be:
A glass of water
A stretch
A few deep breaths
A break from your screen
A moment of quiet
The more you do this, the easier it becomes.
You begin to recognise your signals earlier. You begin to trust yourself more. You begin to respond with kindness instead of force.
You Deserve To Feel Good, Not Just Function
So many people are just getting through the day.
Ticking boxes. Meeting expectations. Holding everything together.
But life is not meant to feel like survival mode.
You deserve to feel good. You deserve to feel calm, energised, and connected. You deserve to enjoy your life, not just push through it.
And that starts with how you treat yourself.
A Gentle Reminder
If your body has been asking you to slow down, this is your reminder to listen.
You don’t have to wait until you’re burnt out. You don’t have to wait until you’re in pain. You don’t have to wait until everything feels too much.
You can choose now.
Choose to rest. Choose to pause. Choose to take care of yourself in the way you so often take care of others.
Because you matter too.
If this resonates with you, maybe today is the day you give yourself that time. Even if it’s just an hour. Even if it’s just a moment.
Start there.
Your body will thank you for it.
